The Goblin Teasmade
N.B. You can divert from this chronology of teawakers to read more about the Goblin brand.

The
Goblin Teasmade Date confirmed - 1936 Goblin bought the rights to the invention by Brenner Thornton and William Hermann and began to market it in 1937 under the name Teasmade (no model number). Many thanks to Doug for presenting me with the Teasmade launch leaflet shown here as a wedding present - what a lovely gift! The Teasmade was available in two designs in a cream, green or blue finish. |

Alarm
Model The "Alarm Model" is made of plywood. The clock is a synchronous Goblin Electric Alarm Clock (not manufactured by Smiths as previously believed). The kettle is chrome plated and fitted with a patented element. A lampshade "of a pleasing and modern design" was included. It is marked Goblin Electric on the dial just below the twelve, and Made in England on the bottom of the dial. The name Goblin Electric and "patent app. for" is on the back of the clock. On the underside of the base is the name Goblin and the number 1207. The example illustrated is complete with original yellow teapot marked Made in England. Incredibly this is in mint condition, with no stains or chips. |

Day

The Teasmade is shown
here advertised in a 1938 Hobday Brothers electrical
catalogue for £5/15/6. Note that for the model offered by Hobday's the tray and stand are painted green, with a matching green tinted lampshade. A teapot, two cups, saucers, cream jug and sugar basin are all provided. Production was halted in 1939 due to the outbreak of war, and did not resume until 1947. |

By this time BVC had used several illustrations of goblins on their literature. In 1937 the leaping red goblin, pictured left on a later label, was in regular use. Goblin registered the red goblin device, leaping and standing, as a trademark on 17th September 1940. The initial registration ran for 14 years, was renewed for another 14 on 17/9/54 and again on 17/9/68. It was formally abandoned on 8th April 1982. A memo states: "We have no intention of using this symbol again." |
