Goblin
Teasmade model D20 The second full production Goblin model that I have been able to trace is the Goblin D20. This Teasmade was a fabulous piece of Art Deco styling in a plywood case, which was often painted or wallpapered to match the bedroom decor! By now the Teasmade was in full production alongside Goblin's range of electric clocks. It was acquiring great popularity as a desirable gift. Goblin used 250 demonstrators in department stores and electrical retailers around the UK to add weight to their advertising and promotion of the Teasmade. Although the model appears to have been launched in 1939, production ceased almost immediately. No models were produced during the war years, and production did not recommence until 1947. From that time about 7000 were manufactured each year at a new factory in Northern Ireland. By now the trademark Teasmade had been officially registered (1947) although the name had a near miss when the Chairman proposed changing it to Cheerywake! Doug has acquired an early model whose original owner must have been a true Teasmaniac. According to his grandson who sold it, it was used daily up to his death in 1977. A pilot in the RAF, he even took it abroad with him. It had certainly been well used. When Doug got it going, he was puzzled that a weak tea mixture came out of the teapot without a teabag in it. After flushing it out many times eventually a lot of old tea-leaves came out from behind the built in strainer that the cube teapot has. They must have been there at least 25 years plus! |

In
1949 (which I believe was the last year of production for
this model), the D20 retailed for £11.0.0, or £12.5.0
with the optional tray. The teasmade and the tray are both covered in cream coloured textured paint. The tray is made of wood (the underside is not painted). There are very small potmarks on the actual teasmade that seem to show that this too has a wooden body (plywood?) underneath the paint. The teapot for this version is a very neat cube design, without the projecting handle of later models. These pictures show a model D20 with serial number 09009. |
